AN IMPORTANT PAIR OF GEORGE III SERPENTINE COMMODES
A fine pair of late eighteenth century mahogany serpentine commodes, the tops with satinwood crossbanding, each with a central oval medallion of fine mahogany flame veneer. With graduated drawers, two short drawers above two deep drawers, possibly for storing top hats, retaining the original fire gilded handles, each with finely chased paterae, all supported above exaggerated bracket feet.
A FINE GREEN JAPANNED LACQUER LONG FACED CLOCK
A mid-eighteenth century green japanned lacquer long cased clock, the case decorated with figures within a naturalistic setting surrounded by pagodas, birds, butterflies and dogs. The arched hood with three spherical finials terminating in glided tips and the mechanism by William Post of London Bridge, with the clock striking on the hour with additional second hand and date window.
William Post (c.1727-1782) was a clock and watchmaker from the 18th century, with shop premises on London Bridge where he likely lived above. The Goldsmiths company have record of him operating there from 1738-1757 until watchmaker Alderman Stephenson appointed him his deputy. He was later a member of the Clockmakers Company from 1766-1776.
