A PAIR OF LOUIS XV TRANSITIONAL FRENCH FAUTEUILS : STAMPED N.S.COURTOIS

5,900.00

France, c. 1770

A fine pair of mid 18th century transitional fauteuils armchairs, the kidney shaped backs running to curvaceous arms raised on classical fluted and tapering legs. Stamped N.S.Courtois (Nicolas Simon Courtois maitre 1766 - Paris).

The term 'transitional' defines the period between the rococo and neo classical during the later years of Louis XV's reign. These fauteuils have rococo backs and arms but rather than a curved cabriole leg, the transitional leg is used with classical fluting. As the style progressed under the reign of Louis XVI the style of chairs became increasingly restrained.
